Bring Your Wooden Floors Back to Life

Believe it or not hardwood flooring can increase the value of your home. It also looks a lot nicer and can even help you to sell your home.

Many people rip up their carpet and find old hardwood flooring underneath. Unfortunately many of those people then cover it up with brand new carpet!

What they don’t realise is that if they were to rent some machines and sand down the floors, they could reveal something very beautiful and valuable. As little as 1mm under the surface lies, effectively, a brand new floor.

Not only does a freshly sanded and lacquered floor look stunning, it can also last a hell of a lot longer than carpet. Not to mention that it’s easier to clean! Depending on the type of flooring you have, it could last over a 100 years. On such flooring, after 80 years all that is required is a sanding to reveal a fresh clean wooden surface with beautiful grain.

Now it may seem like a daunting task to rent those heavy machines and rip into your wooden floors, but help is at hand!

Ben Osborne from Osborne Woodcare has created an entire website about refinishing wood floors. There you can learn everything you need to know to sand, fill and lacquer your own hardwood floors.

On the other hand, if you think it would be a breeze, I would still recommend you have a look at the tutorials on his site. Floor sanding is more of an art than you might think.

Then again, you may be flush with cash or may have an expensive floor that you want to look absolutely perfect. In which case, by all means, hire a professional! Just be weary who you hire and above all don’t let a builder or a decorator do it!
