Knee wall Knee wall after insulation

Example of an UN-insulated Knee Wall in a Home in DFW area. The builder didn't even bother to put up batted insulation which is required by code.  All that is between the owner and the hot attic is .50 inches of drywall.

A Knee wall is in any home that has vaulted ceilings in one room and the adjacent rooms have lower ceilings. For example a living room with 10 foot ceiling next to a bedroom with 8 foot ceilings would have a 2 foot knee wall.

The same knee wall after two part foam has been sprayed into the cavity, providing R-20 insulation and a tight air barrier all in one step. This lack of insulation was degrading the overall effectiveness of the attic insulation.

can light

Here is a typical can light with all of the insulation moved away from it to prevent overheating. This is basically a 12 inch hole into the attic that is uninsulated and leaking air. We would cover this with a custom cover or replace it with an insulated can light that can then be covered with insulation.

after blown insulation

Many homes have a walk in attic like this one. Not only is there no air barrier over the insulation, but air is seeping in round the electrical penetrations and the large gap around the door frame.

Here we have installed R-5 ductboard over top of the batted insulation bringing it up to R-16 overall.  We have also filled the gap around the door with foam and used foil backed tape around all the electrical penetrations.

One can see that this batted insulation really isn't doing its job. It is compressed and not providing any air barrier.

Now we have an air barrier and increased insulation all in one step.
